“I Wish Everything Was Back to Normal!”

When Lockdown was announced in March 2020 DIY members started exploring different ways of telling our stories. Because live theatre was no longer available to us we had to find other ways to connect creatively with each-other as performers and with our audiences. We turned to a combination of film and music as a way to do this.

In our film, “I Wish Everything Was Back to Normal” DIY actors offer our very personal views and feelings about Lockdown. Working online with film-maker Hilary Easter-Jones, individual DIY members recorded sections of film on our phones which have been brought together in this piece.

The film was premiered on Youtube on Friday 17th July and was presented as part of the Connect LD+ 2020 Festival organized by The Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company on Monday 7th September 2020.

In 2022 the film was added to the North West Film Archive as part of their Lockdown Life collection.

As well as “I Wish Everything was Back to Normal” the company produced two shorter films – songs during this period. These are called  “We’re All in This Together” and “Always Connecting”.

DIY members worked with musician Sarah Atter to write and record two original songs based on our personal experiences of Lockdown. We gathered all our ideas over the phone and on Zoom and we recorded our voices down the phone! “We’re All in This Together” and “Always Connecting” were also shown as part of the Connect LD+ 2020 Festival organized by The Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company on Monday 7th September 2020.
