You’re invited: Weaving the Threads Together
A special event for Learning Disability Week
Weaving the Threads Together: Tackling Health Inequalities Through Creativity
Friday 19th June
1.00 pm to 3.00 pm
The Angel Centre, Salford M3 6FA
This year, Learning Disability Week runs from 15th to 21st June. It’s an annual event by Mencap to raise awareness, challenge barriers, and celebrate the achievements of people with lived experience of learning disability.
In Salford, Learning Disability Week also means Big Health Week! There’ll be lots of fun and informative activities taking place for and with people with learning disabilities – as well as their families and carers.
Last year, to mark Learning Disability Week and Salford’s Big Health Week, DIY held a special premiere screening of three films created by DIY Gamechangers as part of our Acting for Health project.
This year, we’re building on Acting for Health with a special event to share our approaches to creativity, health, and wellbeing with others – and you’re invited!

Weaving the Threads Together: Tackling Health Inequalities Through Creativity
This special event will bring together people with lived experience of learning disability, health and social care professionals, DIY supporters – in fact, anybody interested in how creativity can be used to explore and challenge health inequalities.
A recent report on health and social care in Salford showed that people with lived experience of learning disability have not been listened to enough. So this is a chance to share, learn, and build stronger connections between lived experience, creativity, health, and social care.
The title is inspired by the weaving work we’ve been doing with refugee artists as part of a DIY Gamechangers project. It reflects our belief that more inclusive healthcare starts when we bring ideas and experiences together in co-operative and collaborative ways.

Weaving work completed by DIY Gamechangers, which inspired the title of this event.
What to expect at the event
Led by DIY Gamechangers, the event will explore creative ways to think about health and wellbeing, making space for conversations about what more we can all do to tackle health inequalities together.
Together, we’ll explore questions like:
- How can people with lived experience connect with health professionals in more meaningful ways?
- How can these worlds work creatively and collaboratively to achieve better health and wellbeing outcomes for all?
DIY Gamechangers are experts. They’ve delivered lots of training with medical students at The University of Manchester and Occupational Therapy students at The University of Salford.
We’ve also created films and resources for healthcare professionals that challenge assumptions, spark discussion, and highlight ongoing health inequalities. So our members have a lot to say about how health can be made more equal!
We’ll share these films and resources during the event, as well as facilitating lots of hands-on visual arts and drama activities.
