Everyone at DIY is looking forward to a new term and lots of exciting new creative opportunities!

This term DIY is running four different sessions for adults with learning disabilities who want to get creative – join us this September to learn new skills and meet new people.

Thanks to our great funders all our sessions are free to attend. What are you going to get involved in? – read on for inspiration.

Thursday Sessions at Salford Museum & Art Gallery

DIY’s open access sessions are open to anyone with a learning disability in Salford who wants to get creative. This term, DIY’s visual arts and BUDS sessions are going to be responding creatively to the “Exploring the Collection: Colour” exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which showcases a variety of the museum’s collection including paintings, ceramics, costume and decorative objects.

Participants will draw connections between colour, emotions and wellbeing. What does colour mean to us? What feelings does it prompt? What memories does it bring? Participants will share responses and open up verbal and non-verbal conversations about what colour represents to them.

These activities are funded by UK Shared Prosperity Fund with support from Salford CVS and Salford City Council.

Visual Arts Sessions: Exploring Colour

During this term we will be responding to exhibits in Salford Museum and Gallery, to explore the theme of colour. We will be creating our own artworks based on our own observations. Approaches will include mixing paints and printing layers of different colours on top of each-other to explore effects.

Sessions will begin on Thursday 18th September and then every session will take place on Thursday mornings, 10am to 12.00 noon, at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Peel Park, The Crescent, Salford, M5 4WU.

DIY BUDS: The Magic of Colour

This term DIY BUDS will be using the gallery as stimulus for drama work which will continue and build on the Escape Room theme explored last term. Approaches will include creative writing, using objects from the collection as stimulus, and developing stories and characters in response to the exhibition.

Sessions begin on Thursday 18th September and then every session will take place on Thursday afternoons, 1pm to 3pm at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Peel Park, The Crescent, Salford, M5 4WU.

Please note there will be no session on 30 October.

Community Learning Courses with Aspire

DIY will also be building on our positive relationship with Aspire this term. We will continue working with Aspire, St George’s and will be entering into a new partnership with Brierley Community Hub in Little Hulton.

These courses are part of DIY’s Creative Arts Programme funded by Salford Community Learning. They are designed to be accessible to all and focus on much more than just creative skills. They help learners build confidence, improve communication, and develop teamwork. Sessions encourage self-expression in all its forms, whether through drama, movement, or performance.

ASPIRE: St George’s: More First Steps: Improvisation Skills

This term Aspire will be running a More First Steps: Improvisation Skills course. Group members will build on last term’s First Steps course to develop their improvisation skills and use these skills to create more settings, characters and stories.

Sessions begin on Monday 15th September, and then take place on Monday afternoons from 1pm to 3pm, at St George’s Community Hub and Cafe, Langley Rd S, Salford M6 6SB.

ASPIRE: Brierley Community Hub: First Steps: Drama Skills

This term for the very first time, DIY will be running a community learning course in partnership with Brierley Community Hub.  Participants will collaborate with others, work with different props and objects to make drama, show different feelings using facial expressions, body language and voice, use drama techniques to tell a story and reflect on their own learning in creative ways.

Sessions will begin on Monday 15th September, and then take place on Wednesday Mornings, 10 am to 12pm, at  Brierley Community Hub and Cafe, Longshaw Drive, Little Hulton, Salford  M28 0BD.
